Enquiry instituted into Riah Phiyega's fitness to hold office - The Presidency

President Zuma has also afforded SAPS national commissioner an opportunity to say why she should not be suspended pending outcome

Notice with respect to General Phiyega in terms of Section 9(1) read with Section 8(3)(a) of the South African Police Act 68 of 1995 as amended

President Jacob Zuma has written to the National Police Commissioner, General Victoria Phiyega, informing her of his intention to institute an enquiry into the allegations of misconduct and/or lack of fitness for the office that she occupies and /or her ability to execute her duties efficiently with regard thereto, or any other conduct which may have a bearing on her position as Head of the Police Service, in terms of Section 9(1) to (2) read with Section 8(1) to(8) of the South African Police Act 68 of 1995, as amended(the ”Act”).

The President has also afforded General Phiyega an opportunity to make written representations to him as to why she should not be placed on suspension pending the outcome of the enquiry in terms of Section 8(3)(a) of the Act.

The President received and considered the Report of Judge Farlam pertaining to the Marikana Commission of Inquiry and has also received the comments of General Phiyega on the recommendations and findings contained therein.
