Harmony Gold’s takeover of AngloGold Ashanti's SA mines welcomed – Solidarity

Union says company is fully committed to advancement of mining sector in the country

Solidarity welcomes Harmony Gold’s takeover of AngloGold Ashanti

12 February 2020

Solidarity welcomes the announcement that Harmony Gold will become the new owner of AngloGold Ashanti’s remaining South African assets, namely the Mponeng Mine and Mine Waste Solutions.

Harmony is fully committed to the advancement and expansion of the South African mining sector, and it has a good track record with regard to the mining of deep mines.

This morning, Harmony also confirmed to trade unions that it does not envisage any retrenchments at mining level after the takeover. Harmony will take on nearly 6 500 AngloGold employees.

“Although Solidarity is grateful for the takeover by Harmony, the trade union is concerned about the fact that another leading mining company such as AngloGold Ashanti has decided to withdraw from South Africa and rather expand its mining operations outside South Africa,” said Solidarity General Secretary Gideon du Plessis.
