Hawks investigating Mbete and Gold Fields' BEE deal - James Lorimer

DA MP says this follows his request under the Prevention and Combatting of corrupt Activities Act, Act 12 of 2004

Hawks launch enquiry into Mbete deal with Gold Fields

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the Hawks, have confirmed that it is investigating allegations of criminal conduct surrounding the allocation of mining rights at the Gold Fields South Deep mine involving ANC Chairperson, Baleka Mbete.

This follows the DA's request for an investigation under the Prevention and Combatting of corrupt Activities Act, Act 12 of 2004.

The DA welcomes the willingness of the Hawks to investigate the serious concerns about misconduct as well as the allegations of corruption and exertion of undue influence in awarding mining licenses.

We trust that the Hawks will be afforded the opportunity to investigate without fear or favour and with the full cooperation from everyone involved.

The DA recognises the vital role mining plays in our economy, our development and in creating jobs. To ensure that the industry continues to attract the required investment it needs to be corruption free.
