Here is the secret Madibeng Water Report - Leon Basson

DA MP says document states that water service management has deteriorated to such an extent that a national water crisis is imminent

Madibeng Water Report leaked to DA; shows systemic water failures countrywide

15 October 2014

The Democratic Alliance is in possession of the full Madibeng Water Report, showing catastrophic failures in the water supply in Madibeng, and systemic failures in water supply, countrywide.

The report states that the Department under former Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, was aware of roughly 20 Municipalities affecting 100 water supply systems in the country, where water service management has deteriorated to such an extent that a national water crisis is imminent.

Residents of Gauteng, left without water for three weeks last month, have seen this national water crisis now come to fruition.

Last year, the former Minister set up a Task Team to investigate serious water supply issues facing South Africa and earlier this year, the DA requested the new Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane to release the Task Team's report dated 10 April 2014.

Minister Mokonyane has however, been silent on the matter and to date the report of the Task Team has been blocked from being tabled before Parliament.

The DA therefore makes known the content of the report, titled "Failure of Water Supply in Madibeng Municipality" in order that the truth is made known.

The situation in Madibeng and many other water-constrained municipalities is untenable.

The Minister must now take immediate action to implement the findings and eight remedial recommendations of the report.
