Johannes Mutchinya to join 17 others in Kusile R2.2bn matter – NPA

Accused arrested this morning at his residence in Gauteng and faces charges of money laundering

Johannes Mutchinya arrested to join 17 others accused in Eskom Kusile R2.2 billion matter in September 2023

Lese’tsa Johannes Mutchinya has been granted bail by the Middelburg Specialised Commercial Court, in the amount of R100 000. He was arrested this morning at his residence in Gauteng, in relation to the R2.2 billion matter linked to the building of the Kusile Power Station. He faces charges of money laundering, for his alleged role and ostensibly laundered R3.1 million resulting from corrupt dealings through his companies. The companies allegedly used to launder money are still to be added in the next court appearance.

Stringent bail conditions have also been imposed.

He joins the following accused in the matter, former SA Local Government Association (SALGA) Chief Executive Thabo Mokwena, Eskom's former interim Chief Executive Matshela Koko, his wife, Mosima Koko, and Koko’s stepdaughters Koketso Aren and Thato Choma. Eskom Project Director at Kusile (most senior on site) Hlupheka Sithole, Lawyer Johannes Coetzee and Watson Seswai.

All the accused are expected back in court on 04 September 2023.
