Justice for Anene Booysen 

The DA welcomes the conviction of Johannes Kana for the brutal rape, mutilation and murder of Anene Booysen.

This heinous act left South Africa angry and shocked. It was a violent scar on our nation.

I hope that this conviction sends a message to all South Africans that violence against women or any person will be met with the full force of the law. It must also serve as a reminder of the constant reality of violence and abuse that so many women face in our country today. 

We have a great deal of work to do to build a society in which women enjoy the same freedoms as men, and can live their lives without fear.

We hope this conviction and subsequent sentencing will provide Anene's family, friends and loved ones with a sense of closure.

We must now work together, in memory of Anene Booysen, towards fixing what is broken in our society and prevent unspeakable crimes such as this from ever being committed again.
