Justice has been compromised - Buthelezi

The IFP leader says the dropped charges will cast a shadow over a Jacob Zuma presidency

NPA DECISION TO DROP ZUMA CHARGES

While one understands the embarrassing position the Directorate of Prosecutions was placed in by the McCarthy telephonic conversations, I still believe that it is most unfortunate for Mr Zuma not to have had his day in court.

I have repeatedly called for Mr Zuma to have his day in court in order to clear his name of the serious allegations against him.

I feel the charges will now be a shadow over him as our Head of State.

The consequences of today's decision for South Africa will damage our country's image and the decision is bound to affect the reputation and credibility of our country, both nationally and internationally, especially in light of the Schabir Shaik's conviction on the basis of his friendship with Mr Zuma.

I would also like to raise my concern with Mr Zuma's media trial that made today's decision no great surprise. The public knew the outcome last week as the headlines declared 'Zuma is Free' even before the NPA declared it.

Justice has been compromised every step of the way.

Now we will have to face the consequences.
