Marius Fransman on WCape farmworker strike

ANC leader condemns reckless actions of some farmers, commends workers who don't engage in irresponsible behaviour

ANC CALLS FOR RESPONSIBLE ACTIONS

The ANC commends those farmers of the Western Cape who have already increased the daily wage for farm labourers and all those progressive land owners who have given their assistance to the workers embroiled in the present industry dispute.

The ANC also commends all the disciplined workers who do not engage in irresponsible behaviour while they demonstrate to raise awareness of their real issues like the inadequate wages and exploitive conditions they are subjected to.

ANC Western Cape leader Marius Fransman says: "The ANC in this province is also very disappointed that organised agriculture has not risen to engage with workers on their real demands and hardships.

"Even with some conciliatory utterances, too many continue to hide behind the negotiated minimum wage as if they cannot pay workers anything better. There is no upper limit on what workers can be paid, yet some farmers behave as if the minimum wage is the only amount they may pay. They are wrong and the result of this ill-considered assumption is on the streets for all to see.

"The ANC has called for calm throughout the dispute and reiterate its call for people not to do illegal things, hurt people or damage property. The ANC recognise their right to organise and voice their grievances, but calls for composed actions.

"The ANC condemns the reckless actions of a number of farmers who brought in mercenaries with warfare equipment, because they refuse to enter into due negotiations.

"The ANC also calls on Cosatu's Western Cape secretary general Tony Ehrenreich to provide leadership in the standoff. The ANC knows there are low levels of representation for these workers, but some leaders like him called on or supported workers to resume the strike and it is incumbent on them to guide the workers through the process. Now is the time for them to show what they are made of and ensure effective mediation."

The ANC will continue to play its role both in government and as a party to ensure amicable outcomes that would be in the interests of the workers and the industry as a whole.
