Mdluli's reinstatement disgraceful - Dianne Kohler Barnard

DA MP says prosecution against crime intelligence boss improperly dropped (March 28)

DA objects to lifting of Mdluli's suspension, will pursue avenues to ensure law takes its course

Reports this evening suggest that the suspension of Crime Intelligence Boss Richard Mdluli has been lifted by the Police (see report).

The Democratic Alliance (DA) holds that this is an absolute disgrace given the controversy surrounding Mdluli, including allegations of fraud and murder.

The DA maintains that the prosecution of Mdluli was improperly dropped amid allegations of political interference.

It is imperative that the decision to drop the charges be reviewed particularly in the light of increasing speculation that Mdluli will be appointed as National Police Commissioner due to his alleged involvement in ANC factional politics and rumoured ties to President Jacob Zuma.

Accordingly the DA objects to the lifting of Mdluli's suspension and will investigate all avenues available to ensure that the law takes its course. The insistence of the police not to discuss the matter in public is also unacceptable given the controversial nature of the decision and the immense public interest in the matter.

South Africans deserve a full and comprehensive explanation for the decision and the DA will be utilising all mechanisms available to ensure that this is forthcoming.
