MEC echoes calls for the dissolution of Ekurhuleni Council - DA

Tania Campbell says residents held at ransom while the ANC and EFF play Russian Roulette with their lives

DA vindicated as MEC echoes calls for the dissolution of Ekurhuleni Council

5 April 2024

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni acknowledges the Gauteng MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mzi Khumalo’s pronouncement that Ekurhuleni’s Council has become a candidate for the dissolution of Council.

This comes after the EFF elected Speaker, Cllr Nthabiseng Tshivhenga postponed the extra-ordinary council sitting which was set to be convened yesterday in order to elect a new Executive Mayor.

The DA has been calling for the dissolution of council as we believe no number of motions of no confidence or re-elections of Executive Mayors can save the failing state of Ekurhuleni.

Communities across the city are held at ransom while the ANC and EFF play Russian Roulette with their lives, squabbling over positions and political power plays.

This, while Ekurhuleni Council is held hostage by the EFF Speaker, who continues to put her own political party agenda ahead of her legislative duties as Speaker of the house.

The widespread political instability in Ekurhuleni can only be resolved through fresh elections, where residents will vote for a renewed mandate on service delivery!

As the City of Ekurhuleni continues to remain leaderless, service delivery across the city continues to collapse.

It is unfortunate that our amendment to the Motion of no Confidence in the Executive Mayor, which called for council to be dissolved was not accepted. But we are now vindicated in our call, following the MEC’s pronouncement.

The current governance woes in the city will having a lasting effect on communities. We can no longer ignore the residents of Ekurhuleni. We must put an end to the political games and put the residents first by dissolving council.

We will continue to fight to rescue Ekurhuleni.
