Molefe's appointment as SABC new chief unprocedural - NUMSA

Union says choice benefits those want to use broadcaster for propaganda purposes

NUMSA STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF SABC HEAD OF NEWS!

The NATIONAL UNION OF METALWORKERS OF SOUTH AFRICA (Numsa) notes the unprocedural appointment of Phil Molefe as the SABC Head of News, as announced by SABC Group Chief Executive Solly Mokoetle.

We are deeply concerned about this seemingly unprocedural and flawed appointment of Molefe as the Head of News. This appointment raises serious suspicions that the GCEO acted to appease certain individuals who want to use the SABC as their propaganda spewing machine.

We demand the SABC Board to reverse this ‘unmandated' appointment by the GCEO in the interests of making sure proper procedures are followed in the appointment of the SABC Head of News. This is nothing else but a re-invention of the Nazi Germany's Josef Goebells evil hand on this appointment by the GCEO which compromises the Board's immediate mandate of rebuilding the public broadcaster from the Board's previous squabbles and shenanigans.

The appointment should be done through a transparent and open process.

Statement issued by Castro Ngobese, NUMSA national spokesperson, May 20 2010
