Need for more preventative health measures in Alexandra – Jack Bloom

DA says there is an Increase in patients due to population increase and rise in disease

Huge increase in patients at Alexandra Clinic

6 September 2016

There has been a huge increase in patients attending the Alexandra Health Centre (AHC), with 305 000 patients seen last year, up from 190 000 in 2013 and 236 000 in 2014.

This is revealed by Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu in a written reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature.

The AHC used to be independently run, but was taken over by the Gauteng Health Department in July last year.

It has 167 employees and has a budget this year of R74.7 million.

The AHC dates back more than 80 years when it was founded by a missionary church as a mother and child clinic in the 1930s.

The increase in patients reflects both the population increase in Alexandra and a worrying rise in disease that highlights the need for more preventive health measures.

I hope that the take-over by the Department enhances the proud history of this clinic and its many community health projects.
