Nkandla: We are in process of compiling our final report - SIU

Unit says it earlier submitted a progress report to the President on April 15

Statement by SIU on its Progress Report to the President

The Special Investigating Unit was directed on 20 December 2013 to investigate certain allegations made in respect of the security upgrades to the private residence of the President in Nkandla. The investigation began soon thereafter. The investigation is being finalised.

The Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act, No 74 of 1996, contemplates two types of Reports by the SIU to the President.

First, in terms of section 4(1)(f) of the SIU Act, the President may direct the SIU to report on the progress made in the investigation. Second, section 4(1)(g) of the SIU Act requires the SIU, upon the conclusion of its investigation, to submit a final report to the President.

Following a request for a Progress Report on its investigation, the SIU submitted a Progress Report to the Presidency on 15 April 2014.

The SIU is in the process of compiling its final report.

In terms of the SIU Act, only the President may communicate to third parties the contents of reports that the SIU submits to him. In the circumstances, the SIU is unfortunately not at liberty to say anything about the contents of the Progress Report.
