Now hospital maintenance staff don't get paid - Jack Bloom

Workers at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital still waiting for January salaries

HOSPITAL MAINTENANCE WORKERS NOT PAID

Seventy maintenance workers at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital have not yet been paid for January.

It appears to be another foul-up by the Gauteng Shared Services Centre which has also led to many doctors not being paid on time. Late submission of paperwork is blamed, but this is a poor excuse.

These workers are on contract with the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development. They are electricians, boiler-makers, carpenters and plumbers who perform vital work in keeping the hospital going.

It is really appalling that they must suffer because of inexcusable inefficiency. I support the call by the SA Medical Association for the GSSC to be removed from hospital administration as the centralized model does not work.

Hospital managers should have full control over staff, including maintenance workers who should fall under them not the Department of Infrastructure Development.
