PSC must investigate Manyi appointment - FF+

Anton Alberts questions whether cabinet spokesperson can do his job properly, given his other commitments

MANYI: FF PLUS ASKS FOR PUBLIC SERVICES COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE

The FF Plus will be asking the Public Services Commission to investigate Jimmy Manyi's appointment as cabinet spokesperson in terms of the Public Services Act, 103 of 1994. In terms of section 30(a) and (b) public servants are not allowed to do additional work and receive remuneration for it.

"There is quite a bit of information which indicates that Manyi has other positions in addition to being the chairperson of the Black Management Forum. The Public Services Commission must investigate this irregularity and make a recommendation as to whether the appointment of Manyi is in order or not," Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus' parliamentary spokesperson on Labour said.

"The Minister of Public Service and Administration may give approval for a public servant to hold positions outside of the public service if it does not interfere with the adhering to the legal obligation of placing the whole of his/her time at the disposal of the public service. We however do not know if this may be the case with Jimmy Manyi and that is why we are requesting the investigation," Adv. Alberts said.

The FF Plus' investigation has brought to light that Manyi also holds the following positions:

1. President of the Black Management Forum (BMF);

2. President of the Black Management Forum's investment arm, the BMFI;

3. President of the Confederation of Black Business Organisations (CBBO);

4. Non-executive director of various companies and boards of directors, such as IBM, South Africa and Meegbank.

"The FF Plus has always maintained that Manyi is not suitable to hold a public position. The public outcry to his racist comments has once again confirmed the opinion of the party to be correct. If it is found that Manyi did not have the required permission to hold the additional positions in addition to his cabinet spokesperson position, Manyi has to be fired and an end brought to the state wasting taxpayer's money on this incompetent official," Adv. Alberts added.
