Rashied Staggie's release a test for the DCS - James Selfe

DA MP says dept must ensure that former gang leader adhere to all his parole conditions

Staggie release: a vitally important test for Correctional Services

Today's release of former gang leader, Rashied Staggie, from Polsmoor Prison is a vitally important test for the Department of Correctional Services (see Daily Maverick report). The DA will closely monitor the conduct of Mr Staggie and the Department's handling of his release on day parole.

Correctional Services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele and his Department must ensure that Mr Staggie adhere to all his parole conditions, including reporting back to Polsmoor every night. Should Mr Staggie violate any of the conditions of his release, he should be re-arrested at once.

We also call on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to be on high alert and decisively address any potential increase in gang violence following Mr Staggie's release.

Perhaps the greatest test for South Africa's Correctional Services today, is whether it has been able to rehabilitate Mr Staggie and prepare him for release back into society during his ten year incarceration.

The DA will be closely monitoring the situation and trust that every possible measure has been taken to ensure that Mr Staggie's release does not result any further gang-related violence.

Statement issued by James Selfe MP, DA Shadow Minister of Correctional Services, September 23 2013
