RESPONSE TO RAPE OF 13-YEAR OLD GIRL ALLEGEDLY BY PRINCIPAL

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union condemns the rape of a 13-year old girl who was allegedly attacked by her principal in 2012 (see report).

SADTU's General Secretary, Mugwena Maluleke said; "Sexual assault imposed on students deserves our urgent attention and action; those who are found guilty of sexual abuse should receive the harshest sentence for their crime."

SADTU safeguards the safety of its teachers as well as its pupils, and they have launched an internal investigation into this case to ensure that justice is served.

The girl, now 14-years old, fell pregnant following the incident by the man who allegedly raped her and has since had the baby. The man was arrested in Marchand; the court case has been postponed until the end of November this year.

"The safety and security of our teachers and pupils is of utmost importance. We are working with the Department of Education to ensure that safety and security procedures are followed to protect both teachers and pupils," concluded Maluleke.
