DA MP welcomes convictions in murder case, victim's family battling to get by

SAPS should compensate Mido Macia’s family

25 August 2015

The DA welcomes the North Gauteng High Court’s judgement today in the murder case of Mido Macia in 2012. All eight accused for his murder have been found guilty. This is one step closer to closure for his widow and his son who had their breadwinner and loved one untimely ripped from their lives.

This comes after the entire country watched in horror as cellphone footage depicted Mr Macia being dragged behind a police van through the streets of Daveyton.

It is high-time that the state offer compensation to his loved ones who lost their family’s sole provider. After staying in touch with Macia’s brother - who shared what little he had with Mr Macia’s family – it is clear that they are battling each day to get by.

The SAPS as at the 2013/14 financial year has ring-fenced approximately R20.5 billion mainly for SAPS infractions. R853 292 000 is budgeted for assaults and R16 587 235 000 for other police actions.

Some of this money should go towards compensating Mido Macia’s family and the families of those whose loved ones are murdered by criminal members of the police service.

The DA wishes to take this opportunity to again extend our deepest condolences for the tragedy that was Mr Macia’s murder.

We must now take the steps necessary to make sure it does not happen again.
