The trade union Solidarity directed a letter to the Northwest University (NWU) yesterday afternoon requesting the University to reveal information on the proposed lay-offs to the union. This follows after the NWU recently issued a notice to staff members in which the commencement of a restructuring process was announced.

"In the request to the NWU we ask the University to among others, stipulate the operational requirements for the proposed lay-offs according to Article 189(3)(a) of the Labour Law Act, " Johan Botha, deputy general secretary of the Professional Industry at Solidarity, said.

"Solidarity also requests in the letter that the union be included at the consultations during the lay-off process and reminds the University that no employee may be affected by operational requirements before consultation with the trade union in terms of all the items in Article 189(3) of the Labour Law Act has not taken place," Botha said.

Solidarity represents 264 members at the NWU.
