Students’ acts of unity a shining light for our Rainbow Nation - Belinda Bozzoli

DA MP says silent majority wishes to access higher education, feel welcome, receive a quality education, and build a better life

Students’ acts of unity a shining light for our Rainbow Nation

24 February 2016

The DA notes the long overdue statement made by the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, concerning the tragic situation unfolding on many of our campuses.

We further echo his call for lawful and peaceful protest informed by the legitimate concerns of students desperate to access tertiary education and to feel a sense of belonging at these institutions.

South Africa needs bold leadership from Minister Nzimande’s during this time of crisis. It should not take weeks for him to act.

Higher education needs to be made more inclusive for all South Africans. Vital to this is the engagement of stakeholders in a process of meaningful consultation where all voices can be heard in a legitimate and peaceful forum.

Our campuses, and indeed all South African institutions, do not benefit from divisive groups which polarise the very necessary discussions around issues of inclusivity and accessibility.

Radical groups hell-bent on destruction and media headlines, representing a small group of students, cannot be allowed to speak for the majority of students. This silent majority only wishes to access higher education, feel welcome, receive a quality education, and build a better life for themselves.

That is why we must condemn acts of violence which seek to divide the nation at a time when South Africans should be holding hands together.

We warmly welcome and praise those many students who have come together in acts of Unity. Your actions inspire South Africa, and prove that we really are better together; one nation, with one future. Your actions might not dominate the headlines, as it should, but your bravery and courage demonstrate the wisdom and leadership our country needs so desperately.

Higher education is critical to ensuring that we deal with structural inequality in our country, and universities are critical to ensuring that young South Africans are able to reach their full potential. We therefore need to work together to build them, not break them down.
