ELECTION OF NEW LEADERS IN THE NCOP

22 May 2014

The National Council of Provinces today, at its first sitting of the 5th Parliament, elected the new presiding officers and the chief whip of the House to lead the House for the next five years. The new leaders, who were all elected unapposed by the Council, are:

1. Chairperson of the NCOP: Thandi Ruth Modise
2. Deputy Chairperson: Johannes Raseriti Tau
3. Chief Whip of the NCOP: Dr Hunadi Mateme

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus congratulates the new leaders and wishes them well their new responsibilities. All these leaders have combined political and parliamentary experience spanning many years, and we are confident that they will consolidate Parliament's character as a responsive, accountable, transparent and activist institution.

We note that this Parliament, as one of the three arms of the state, is being led by women. This once again underlines the ANC's commitment to systematically realise gender equality and women empowerment.
