DA welcomes decision to withdraw troops from CAR

The Democratic Alliance welcomes reports that a decision was reached at the ECCAS Extraordinary Summit in N'Djamena, Chad, today to withdraw all South African troops from the Central African Republic.

This is especially welcoming news for the family and friends of the troops stationed in the CAR, who over the last week have been in extraordinary danger, and who have lost 13 of their number in battle.

The Presidency should urgently brief the country on the full details of this withdrawal, and we urge the President to ensure that our soldiers are returned to South African soil immediately.

We also re-iterate our call for the President to offer a full explanation of why South  Africa troops were deployed in the CAR in the first place.

Statement issued by DA leader Helen Zille, April 4 2013
