President Zuma reaffirms Government support for Chapter 9 institutions

President Jacob Zuma has reaffirmed government support for the Office of the Public Protector and all Chapter 9 institutions.

The Ministers of Police as well as Justice and Constitutional Development have confirmed to the President that their departments are not undertaking an investigation against the Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela.

Government remains unwavering in its commitment to the Constitution which states that the Chapter 9 institutions are independent and subject only to the Constitution and the law, and that they must be impartial and exercise their powers and perform their functions without fear, favour or prejudice.

The Constitution also states that other organs of state, through legislative and other measures, must assist and protect these institutions to ensure the independence, impartiality, dignity and effectiveness of these institutions, and that no person or organ of state may interfere with the functioning of these institutions.

Statement issued by Mr Mac Maharaj, Special Envoy and Spokesperson to the President, The Presidency, July 11 2011
