Mokonyane must fire Mmemezi - Jack Bloom

DA MPL says evidence against Gauteng MEC is already compelling enough for such an action

PREMIER CAN'T DELAY IN FIRING MMEMEZI

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane must take a decision soon to fire Local Government and Housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi as the reputation of her provincial government worsens each day that he remains in office.

Responding to my questions in the House today, Mokonyane said that she needed to study a report from Mmemezi on his apparent abuse of his government credit card, and also his vehicle accident last year in KwaZulu/Natal.

My view is that the evidence is already compelling enough for Mokonyane to take an executive decision and to fire him, as she did with her first Agriculture MEC when her uninsured official vehicle was stolen.

It is confirmed that Mmemezi bought a R10 000 painting from McDonald's fast food restaurant in Silverton, Pretoria with his credit card. This alone is outrageous and justification to dismiss him forthwith.

It appears that he is only being retained because of internal ANC politics as he is a declared Jacob Zuma supporter and has a strong power base on the West Rand.

According to section 132 (2) of the Constitution, the Premier of a province appoints the members of the Executive Council and may dismiss them.

Mmemezi is a laughing stock amongst the public and many ANC members also express their disdain for him.

According to a report, Economic Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu has called for his dismissal at an ANC meeting.

His conduct is an obvious disgrace and the sooner he goes the better.
