DA statement on SAPS investigation inaccurate - SIU

Boy Ndala says Dianne Kohler Barnard distorted facts laid out in unit's report

SIU statement on the inaccurate statements issued by the DA on the SIU investigation into the SAPS

The SIU has noted astonishingly the distortion of facts within its April to September 2011 in statement issued by the Democratic Alliance's Shadow Minster of Police, Diane Kohler Barnard (see here). The report states that "data analysis revealed 215 possible conflicts of interest and 115 members directly linked to suppliers that have been paid by the SAPS". The DA statement dated 31 July 2012 states: "Besides the 115 SAPS members directly linked to building suppliers, the SIU identified 215 possible conflicts of interest".

This statement is inaccurate and misrepresents the contents of the SIU interim report for April-September 2011 issued to Parliament.  The entire DA statement fails to include the fact that these are only results of a data analysis. The statement also incorrectly links the SAPS members to building suppliers.

The DA statement and other subsequent statements insinuate that members identified as a result of a data analysis are guilty. This is also inaccurate as the investigations into indentified cases were underway.

Such incorrect statements by a prominent political party in the country are disappointing and may distort the facts around the investigation. We request the DA to correct the statement issued on 31 July 2012 and subsequent statements on this matter.
