SCA's judgment on Mdluli welcome - Pieter Groenewald

FF+ MP says the failure of Nathi Mthethwa to act against CI boss is deplorable

FF Plus welcomes prosecution of Richard Mdluli

The FF Plus welcomes the judgment in favour of the pressure group, Freedom Under Law that Richard Mdluli, the Police's former head of crime intelligence has to be prosecuted, Dr. Pieter Groenewald, the FF Plus' chief spokesperson on Police said.

Dr. Groenewald said Mdluli had as the head of the Police's crime intelligence unit caused a lot of damage to South Africa and the laxity of the minister of Police to act decisively is deplorable.

"Due to this inadequate action crime could not be combatted properly because the internal conflicts at intelligence under Mdluli's command impeded investigations.

Crime intelligence is extremely important to combat crime effectively and the FF Plus hopes that the prosecution of Mdluli will be finalised soon as the combating of crime should be a priority in South Africa," Dr. Groenewald said.

Mdluli was suspended following allegations of fraud and corruption as well as complaints relating to the murder of his former mistress's husband.

A post-mortem investigation however found that he was not involved with the man's death and the charges of fraud and corruption were also withdrawn.

He was re-appointed, but was again suspended in 2012, pending the court application of Freedom Under Law to review the setting aside of the charges against him.
