JOINT STATEMENT BY CITY OF CAPE TOWN, GOLDEN ARROW BUS SERVICES, CODETA, CATA AND SANCO

City and taxi associations to establish joint forum

Under the leadership of the City's Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, the City of Cape Town has just met with the leaders of CATA, CODETA, SANCO, Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS), concerned taxi drivers, and the South African Police Service (SAPS). We jointly condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the violence that took place yesterday in Nyanga and surrounding areas.

We believe that the law must take its course. We trust that the South African Police Service will arrest those who were responsible for the violence.

We would like to give assurance to commuters that the City, GABS, and taxi associations will work together to prevent these disruptions from happening again. All public transport services will continue this afternoon as per normal.

To this end, we have jointly committed to establish a new forum with the leaders from the six regions around the city. This will serve as the platform where all taxi associations can debate and discuss their grievances in the future. All organisations present at the meeting are in agreement that the establishment of this forum is of the utmost importance and urgency.
