SACP commends Minister Thulas Nxesi on resolutely fighting corruption

Tuesday, 30 September 2014

The South African Communist Party commends the work of its deployees in government under the leadership of the African National Congress led government in the struggle against corruption. We commend our Deputy National Chairperson, Comrade Thulas Nxesi, for the leading role he is playing as Minister of Public Works in turning around a department that has been riddled with corruption and infiltrated by syndicates working hand in glove with criminal elements in the private construction and property industries.

The SACP welcomes the fraud and corruption investigations into irregular expenditure uncovered by the Department of Public Works in its clean-up of maladministration and illicit activities announced on Monday 29 September by Minister Nxesi.

This should focus on the private sector which is the source of corruption in the public sector.

In most, if not all cases, corruption is a Private "Public" Partnership (P"P"P) with private capital accumulation being both the material base and driver, relying on corruptible individuals in the public sector driven by private personal ambition as opposed to being providers of quality service to the people.

The SACP also welcomes the announcement made by Minister Nxesi that the Department has strengthened accountability and installed new risk prevention measures, systems and structures to curb recurrence of maladministration, fraud and corruption.

As part of the turnaround strategy under Comrade Nxesi's political leadership, the Department announced that it has "uncovered R34.9 billion irregular expenditure, some of which goes back as far as 2001". This indeed demonstrates the Minister's resolve to deal with the historical burden of irregular expenditure, and confirms our Central Committee's statement, released on 4 March, stating:

"While the media has focused on the corruption that Comrade Nxesi has helped to uncover in the refurbishment of the President's residence at Nkandla, this is just the tip of the iceberg of corruption that has historically prevailed in DPW [Department of Public Works]".

The SACP condemns the party of white, apartheid privilege, the DA, for playing narrow party political gimmicks in not acknowledging the work done by the Department of Public Works in fighting corruption. The DA is refusing to divorce the colonial and apartheid myth that Blacks are inherently corrupt.

The SACP says: Red Card to Corruption and racism!
