KZN CABINET STATEMENT FOLLOWING ITS SITTING IN PIETERMARITZBURG ON WEDNESDAY July 29 2009
Cabinet was informed that, following the request by the Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize, the President has duly designated the burial of Mr Ndoda Anthony Xaba, also known as Mfenendala, a provincial funeral.
The President has also authorized that the National Flag be flown at half-mast at every flag station in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, 1 August 2009, as a sign of respect.
Premier Mkhize said the gesture was in honour of Mr Xaba's selfless contribution to the ushering in and consolidation of the democratic order in the country.
President Jacob Zuma will also attend the funeral service at the Sobantu Sports ground, in Pietermaritzburg at 9.30 am.
Cabinet was also informed of the resignation of Mr Bheki Cele as MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison. The President of the Republic has appointed him national Commissioner of Police.
Premier Mkhize thanked Mr Cele for his services to the province, and wished him well for the future.
Consequently, the Premier has restructured the Provincial Executive Council as follows:
MEC Willies Mchunu, currently responsible for Local Government and Traditional Affairs replaces Mr Cele. Mr Mchunu will be replaced by Ms Nomusa Dube.
She is currently the Chief Whip of the African National Congress in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature. Previously she served as Speaker of eThekwini Municipality, and before that as Mayor of the North Central Council which existed before the formal establishment of the Durban Metropolitan Unicity Council in 2000.
Before she joined the Legislature she represented the Republic of South Africa as Ambassador to the Czech Republic. She was instrumental in the signing of important agreements between the countries. She forged relations that enabled South African students to pursue studies in the textile industry in her country of posting.
