Black children not "born free" - YCL

League says StatsSA report highlights racial disparities in living conditions of infants in South Africa

Stats SA report vindicates YCLSA on "Born Frees"

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] has been vindicated by the report released by Statistics SA yesterday on the disparities in living conditions of infants in the country (see here - PDF).

The YCLSA has been strongly opposed to the use of the term "Born Frees" to refer to young people who were born after the 1994 democratic breakthrough. We hold the view that this term is an insult considering the inequalities that still exist between blacks and white nearly 20 years in to our nascent democracy. Considering that it will take a large amount of time and effort to realise an equal society; black youth will continue to be born into families who are toilers because of their disadvantaged backgrounds.

The report which deals with children under the age of 5 paints a bleak picture for black infants. According to the report black infants are still largely born into families from disadvantaged background and they are very much likely in line to inherit the condition their parents live under. This to us as the YCLSA means the consequences of all this disparities and inequalities have the potential to blemish the future of these black children.

According to the report titled South Africa's Young Children: Their Parents and Home Environment 2012 white infants have better health care services as compared to their black counterparts. This can be fixed by speeding up the implementation of the National Health Insurance [NHI]. White infants also have better sanitation and access to fresh water. This also has a huge bearing on the health of black infants.

In the past 19 years the African National Congress [ANC] government has done a lot to bring betterment to the lives of our people. It has dedicated itself to fighting the triple challenge of Unemployment, Inequalities and poverty. More can still be done and that is why our people must continue to vote for the ANC in next year's General Election.
