DA's Motion of No Confidence baseless and frivolous - Office of ANC Chief Whip

Agang's withdrawn motion only served to affirm our longstanding view that such motions are an abuse of Section 102

DA's MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE

5 March 2015

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip notes that, following Agang-SA's abortive motion of no confidence against the President on Tuesday, the DA has sprung a similar motion for debate in the National Assembly.

We accept that our democratic Constitution affords parliamentary parties the right to propose motions of no confidence in the President, even if there is no factual motivation to do so. The ANC is therefore always ready to reaffirm the confidence of the great majority of South Africans in the capable leadership of President Jacob Zuma and his executive. We stand ready to demonstrate, through facts, the great strides we have made together with the South African people in relation to the social and economic transformation of this country to improve our people's material conditions.

The disgrace that was the Agang motion, only served to affirm our longstanding view that such motions are an abuse of Section 102 of the Constitution and a waste of Parliament's valuable time. The DA's motion is no different. It is baseless, frivolous and proposed for no reason other than to attain media attention.

A lot of parliament's time has already been wasted around Agang's motion, and this second motion from the DA would unfortunately further distract Parliament from the real business of addressing the serious challenges confronting many South Africans.

The public would derive no benefit from such time-wasting political gamesmanship of the opposition.
