Moratorium needed on phasing out of Afrikaans schools - FF+
FF PLUS ASKS FOR MORATORIUM ON THE PHASING OUT OF SINGLE MEDIUM AFRIKAANS SCHOOLS
The Freedom Front Plus today in a statement asked for a moratorium on the phasing out of single medium Afrikaans schools. This follows on the application in the Constitutional Court of the Education Department of Mpumalanga and the National Department of Education for leave to appeal the decision of the Court of Appeals in March of this year, that the High School Ermelo could reinstate their language policy to single medium Afrikaans.
Mr. Andrew Gerber, FF Plus spokesperson on Education says this step has become necessary because there will very soon be no such schools left in South Africa if government continues on the road it embarked on in 1994.
"The intolerant attitude which the Department of Education has now adopted, is in shrill contrast with the overtures President Zuma made toward the Afrikaners before and after the election, and during which time he promised to address their fears. In fact, it draws a line through the expectations that the Afrikaner's expectations about reasonable demands will be considered with an open mind. We want to, for once and all know what the real objective of the government is with Afrikaans schools," Mr. Gerber added.
The government does not head what is happening in the outside world in this regard. True democracy means more rights for minority groups. True democracy means that one group does not dominate another group. In India, for example, cultural and religious groups have the right to have their own schools at the expense of the state. In South Africa minority groups now apparently have to pay for this "privilege" themselves.
The fact remains that only single medium Afrikaans schools are being targeted to change their language status. The FF Plus challenges the government to prove the opposite with reliable statistics.
