Ruling party calls for debate on principles not personalities

ANC STATEMENT ON MINISTER MANUEL PERSONALITY ATTACK

The African National Congress (ANC) conceives attacks on the personality of the Minister in the Presidency responsible for National Planning, Trevor Manuel, by COSATU as unfortunate and worrisome (see report).

These attacks destructs actual debate as contained in the Green Paper on the establishment of the National Planning Commission and the Policy Document on Performance Monitoring and Evaluation.

The issues contained in the discussion papers outlive individuals. The focus should be on strengthening the Green Paper content.

The Presidency released the Green Paper on the establishment of the National Planning Commission and the Policy Document on Performance Monitoring and Evaluation as discussion document to kick-start discussion in improving the overall effectiveness of government.

Once consultations on these issues are completed, the process to set up the high level structures will commence and this will be followed by intense work to develop South Africa's long-term vision and other outputs.

Therefore, the ANC calls on all interested parties and individuals to debate principles rather than individual personalities.  This will ensure that we have a better and a healthy discourse which will lead to better solutions for our country.

Statement issued by African National Congress spokesperson, Ishmael Mnisi, September 17 2009
