Vincent Charnley steps down as IWMSA head
THE INSTITUTE OF WASTE MANAGEMENT OF SOUTHERN AFRICA PRESIDENT STEPS DOWN
In an article printed in the Sunday Times (29 November 2009), Vincent Charnley, President of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) was implicated in a recent medical waste investigation conducted by the Green Scorpions. According to the same article, Wasteman Group a patron member of the IWMSA, is also under investigation for the illegal disposal of medical waste at a site near Welkom.
Vincent Charnley, on Sunday indicated "we at the IWMSA do not condone this type of behavior and we will be conducting an independent investigation of our own. We will gladly work closely with the Green Scorpions and authorities and provide them with any assistance and support they may require. This is a dire situation and we will do anything in our power to resolve this."
In subsequent articles published in the Volksblad, Beeld and Die Burger (30 November) other organisations have also been implicated in the illegal disposal of medical waste at the same site near Welkom. "We deplore this kind of behavior and will not tolerate it from any of our members, it is our duty to society to look after and protect them from organisations that will put their health at risk through negligent and criminal behavior" indicated Stan Jewaskiewitz, Vice President of the IWMSA.
"We await the conclusion of the Green Scorpions' investigation and will support them with any assistance that they may require, so that the matter can be resolved speedily and to bring any guilty parties to book." The IWMSA views this as a very serious matter and in the interim, Vincent Charnley, President of the IWMSA has offered to step down from his position as President from the IWMSA Council until the investigation has been concluded.
This has been accepted by the Council. The Wasteman Group has also been suspended by the IWMSA until the investigation by the Green Scorpions has been concluded, this is in line with IWMSA policies and code of ethics.
