DA supports NIA vetting of Gauteng officials - Jack Bloom

Mashatile's interference has undermined fight against corruption in province

DA SUPPORTS NIA VETTING IN GAUTENG

The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng supports Premier Nomvula Mokonyane's reported use of the National Intelligence Agency to vet senior officials in order to root out corruption.

According to today's Sunday Independent, the vetting test includes questions on a person's lifestyle and business links so as to avoid the award of tenders to pals. This has allegedly raised the ire of ANC Gauteng Chairperson Paul Mashatile and the influential "Alex Mafia" (see report).

It is also reported that Mokonyane faces a motion of no confidence tomorrow by the ANC in Gauteng. It is clear that there is now a life or death struggle between Mashatile and Mokonyane that is badly affecting the governance of this province.

Mashatile's interference in the Gauteng Provincial Government has reduced Mokonyane to a shadow premier unable to fight high-level corruption. She has missed opportunities in the past to fight corruption, but it now appears that progress could be made in ousting Mashatile's cronies.

Meanwhile, the province suffers as these two ANC elephants fight.
