Kempton Park hospital to reopen in 2014 - Gauteng DoH

Dept says preparations to refurbish the hospital are underway (Sep 2)

Plans to re-open Kempton Park Hospital in progress

2 Sep 2012

In an effort to strengthen district health and the quality of service delivery in the province, the Gauteng Department of Health is to re-open Kempton Park Hospital in 2015.

Preparations to refurbish the hospital are underway and construction is expected to commence in March 2013 and be completed by the July 2014.

In terms of the Gauteng Provincial Government's Estimates of Capital Expenditure, a provisional medium term budget estimate of R244 million has been allocated over three years for the complete refurbishment and re-opening of this hospital. Further funding will be provided in subsequent years for the completion and commissioning of this project.

The resolution of legal issues, such as the issuing and awarding of a tender and Development Lease Agreement which was never formally agreed upon or signed by either party, and the successful legal appeal by a local private health facility against the planned re-opening of the Kempton Park Hospital as a Folateng Hospital, human and financial resource limitations including a lack of budget prevented the opening of hospital.

The department is hopeful that this initiative will boost the quality of healthcare in the province.
