7/9 provinces support Zuma's re-election - ANCWL

Limpopo and Gauteng only provinces not necessarily supporting continuity of ANC's top three

RE: ANCWL OPENS UP ANC NOMINATION PROCESS

The ANCWL held a special NEC meeting at the Airport Grand Hotel in Boksburg today (Friday) to discuss nominations for the ANC's 53rd National Conference in December. The ANCWL has begun the process, led by the President Angie Motshekga, of nominations for the leadership of the ANC. The President has held a number of consultative sessions with Chairpersons of provinces as well as various ANCWL structures in a bid to gauge trends of women around the country on who should take up leadership positions in the ANC.

There is consensus among seven of the nine provinces who support continuity within the organisation, and therefore support Comrade Jacob Zuma for the position of President, Comrade Kgalema Motlanthe as Deputy President and Comrade Gwede Mantashe as Secretary General. Limpopo province differs in opinion as to who should be nominated in these positions and Gauteng have been busy preparing for their provincial conference and will contribute once that process has been finalised.

The ANCWL is an advocate of the 50 - 50 principal including the top six officials of the ANC, discussions and consultation is still underway regarding the remaining three positions.

With regards to the additional members of the ANC NEC, the women's league have focused only on women during this first round of nominations and have currently only identified women candidates for these positions, however we will be working closely with provinces as this process is far from over.

The process of nominations going forward will see all regions of the ANCWL holding Regional General Councils to discuss the above mentioned nominations and this is a platform where structures can add new names or remove names from the nomination list. From there, all provinces will hold Provincial General Councils to further consolidate nominations before provinces report back to the NEC.

The Secretary General of the Women's League is working on a roadmap to conference which is in line with the ANC time lines.
