Riah Phiyega to be investigated - IPID

Directorate says it will look into charge laid against national commissioner of defeating the ends of justice (Oct 29)

IPID TO INVESTIGATE CASE LODGED AGAINST SAPS NATIONAL COMMISSIONER

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is to investigate the allegations made against the South African Police Service's (SAPS) National Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega. This follows a decision made by the Acting Executive Director of the IPID, Ms Koekie Mbeki.

The decision is in line with Section 28(1)(h) of the IPID Act No. 1 of 2011, which makes provision for the investigation of "any matter referred to the IPID as a result of a decision by the executive director".

A docket of defeating the ends of justice was referred to the IPID's Western Cape provincial office after it was registered at the Bishop Lavis Police Station.

Ms Mbeki said: "As the IPID, we will conduct an independent and impartial investigation and we hope that we will get the necessary cooperation from all parties so that we can expedite this investigation. We expect to complete the investigation within three months".

An investigator has been appointed and given an instruction to fast track the investigation. The investigator will contact all the relevant role players in due course.
