South Africa's Top 100 Companies 2013 - Sunday Times

Coronation Fund Managers ranked first, Michael Jordaan wins Business Leader of the Year, Cyril Ramaphosa receives Lifetime Achievement Award

THE 2013 SUNDAY TIMES TOP 100 COMPANIES RESULTS ANNOUNCED

Johannesburg, 06 November Coronation Fund Managers scooped the coveted title as South Africa's top company at the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies, in association with Johnnie Walker, awards banquet held at the Sandton Convention Centre. Business Leader of the Year was awarded to Michael Jordaan, CEO of FNB, while the Lifetime Achievement Award went to Cyril Ramaphosa.

This is the first year that the Sunday Times has taken a sponsor onboard for this prestigious event and is delighted with the support Johnnie Walker has provided, including the inaugural Nations Greatest Awards.

The Sunday Times Top 100 Companies acknowledges the best-performing businesses on the JSE, based on their shareholder returns over the past five years. Sunday Times editor Phylicia Oppelt says of the business community's value of the annual results, "this has become a highly-coveted accolade since it was first offered more than five decades ago. Part of what has made it so successful is that the business community itself voted to choose Jordaan and Ramaphosa, which is an endorsement of how their peers rate them".

Anton Pillay, CEO of Coronation Fund Managers, expressed his appreciation for the award: "We are honoured to have been named the winner of this year's Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Award. Since our inception 20 years ago, our unwavering commitment to investing for the long-term has enabled us to deliver excellent investment performance across our range of funds, which we believe has resulted in the continued strong support from our clients."

The Business Leader of the Year Award is regarded as the ultimate accolade, with the recipient being decided by CEOs of the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies from the previous year.

Michael Jordaan says, "Recognition by our peers is always the greatest accolade. To the judges and most importantly to my colleagues at FNB, I thank you and have to say a business leader is only as good as the people around him. This award also belongs to the people who shared our vision of making FNB the most innovative bank in the world." Jordaan joins the ranks of previous winners Phuthuma Nhleko, Johann Rupert, Brian Joffe, Graham Mackay, Maria Ramos, Adrian Gore and Whitey Basson.

Cyril Ramaphosa's Lifetime Achievement Award recognises his contribution to the South African economy. Previous winners include Bobby Godsell, Nelson Mandela, Allan Gray, Stephen Koseff, Richard Maponya, Bill Venter, Nthato Motlana, Donald Gordon, Sam Motsuenyane, Koos Bekker, Raymond Ackerman, Anton Rupert and Brian Joffe.

The Corporate Social Investment Leadership Award went to Nedbank for its Local Hero, Imbizo Business Acumen, and Affinity programmes. The award selection process includes a detailed BEE scorecard for all JSE- listed companies, compiled by Who Owns Whom, and also scored on the basis of the impact and sustainability of initiatives.

Rob Rose, editor of Business Times says, "Good business is no longer based only on performance, but evaluating the companies' economic and socio economic investments... Our CSI Award acknowledges good business practices that contribute positively to the communities within which they operate."

This year, the list of Sunday Times Royal Companies includes Capitec Bank Holdings, Coronation Fund Managers, EOH Holdings, Famous Brands, Howden Africa Holdings, Mr Price Group, Oceana Group, Pinnacle Technology Holdings and Woolworths Holdings. The Royal Companies are those which have placed in the top twenty positions of the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies for three consecutive years.

David Gates, Global Head of premium core brands Diageo, was the guest speaker at the event, at which comedian Alan Committie was master of ceremonies.

Notes to editor:

Coronation is currently in a closed period and will be announcing its financial results for the year to end September 2013 on or about 12 November.
