More ungovernability from the ANC in council - Patricia de Lille

Cape Town mayor says party has no respect for council rules, processes or democracy

ANC brings ungovernability campaign to Council chamber for second time

The ANC caucus in the Cape Town City Council has for the second time in recent months bought their ungovernability campaign into the Council Chamber.

This is clearly part of a deliberate and planned strategy to disrupt the work of Council. By refusing to accept the ruling of the Speaker of the Council, Alderman Dirk Smit, on the conduct of one their Councillors, the ANC has shown yet again that they have no respect for Council rules, processes or democracy.

As a result of the ANC's complete disregard for the important work of Council and the fact that they appear determined to waste ratepayer's money, the decision was taken to move the Council meeting from the Chamber to an alternative venue - without the ANC.

In so doing we are sending a strong message that the ANC's ungovernability campaign will not be tolerated, and that we will continue to ensure that Council functions effectively and that we process the important business of the City.

ANC caucus members should hang their heads in shame for their fundamentally undemocratic behaviour.
