Helen Zille elected Deputy Chair of NCOP - DA

Elza van Lingen says WCape Premier's term in the position will last for one year

DA welcomes election of Helen Zille to Deputy chair of NCOP

08 July 2014

The DA welcomes the election of DA leader and Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, to the position of rotating Deputy Chairperson in the National Council of Provinces, today.

We congratulate Ms Zille on her election and believe that this would add value to the NCOP. Indeed, the NCOP must assert its relevance in the legislative process and improve its stature in the eyes of South Africans.

According to Chapter 4 section 64 (3) in the Constitution,  the Deputy Chairperson is elected for a term of one year, and must be succeeded by a delegate from another province, thus every province would be represented in turn.

We wish Ms Zille well in her tenure as Deputy Chairperson in the NCOP and we are confident that she will add great value to functions of the NCOP.
