NUM shocked by Amplats' decision to disinvest

Union says company's sale of its oldest platinum mines will result in job losses

NUM on Anglo Platinum decision to sell its platinum mines

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has noted with serious concern and shock of Anglo Platinum 's decision to sell its oldest South African platinum mines. Anglo Platinum's move would leave 20 000 mineworkers jobless.

The NUM has repeatedly called upon workers to unite in order to defeat the evil nature of capitalism which seeks to put profits first and humanity last.

" Any sale is going to result in job losses and this is punishment for poor workers. We continue to make that appeal for workers to reject divisions and stay united to defend jobs. The proponents of divisions are now nowhere to be found when Mineworkers are losing their jobs. The victims are going to be workers while the sellers will be richer and workers will be poorer and unemployed. ," says Frans Baleni, the NUM General Secretary.

The NUM will engage the company in a bid to save these jobs and appeals on workers to work together to safeguard their own jobs.

Statement issued by Livhuwani Mammburu, Acting NUM National Spokesperson, July 21 2014
