Why are ANC princelings being employed in SSA? - David Maynier

DA MP says Agency is reportedly providing sheltered employment to progeny of many cabinet ministers

Employment of ANC princelings in SSA should be investigated by the IGI

24 August 2014

The Inspector-General for Intelligence, Advocate Faith Radebe, should conduct a full-blown investigation into allegations that ANC "princelings", the dependants of the ANC elite, are being provided with what amounts to sheltered employment by the State Security Agency.

The State Security Agency has reportedly become a source of sheltered employment for ANC "princelings", including the dependants of Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete and Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

The Intelligence Services Regulations provide for several methods of recruitment, including "advertising", "head hunting" and "talent spotting". However, the regulations contain a convenient loophole allowing the minister or director-general to circumvent recruitment processes if they are convinced that a particular appointment may be in the best interests of the State Security Agency.

Recruiting from a narrow pool of approved ANC princelings and ANC cadres will only accelerate the politicisation and internal decay within the State Security Agency.

I will, therefore, be requesting the Inspector-General, Advocate Faith Radebe, to conduct a full-blown investigation into the recruitment and promotion of the ANC elites dependents in the State Security Agency.

The investigation should determine: which dependants of members/presiding officers of the National Executive, National Assembly and National Council of Provinces have been recruited by the State Security Agency; and, in respect of the recruitment of each dependant, (i) how they were recruited, (ii) how they were promoted and (iii) whether proper recruitment and promotion procedures were complied with by the State Security Agency.
