IEC interdicted from filling Oudtshoorn "vacancy" - Ivan Meyer

DA WCape leader says this follows ANC's efforts to falsely engineer DA councillor's "resignation"

DA councillor successfully interdicts IEC against ANC dirty tricks

Friday 12 September

Today the DA Councillor of Ward 11 in Oudtshoorn, Raymond Wildschut, successfully interdicted the Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) not to hold a by-election in his allegedly vacant ward.

This comes after he was deceived into unknowingly "resigning" from the Council.

On Tuesday 19 August, Mr Wildschut received a copy of his so-called "letter of resignation" from the ANC Speaker, Mr John Stoffels. However, Mr Wildschut never wrote nor signed such a letter and realised that it was fraudulent.

He immediately went to the police and laid a charge of fraud (case number: MAS 124/8/2014). The SAPS is investigating the matter and I trust that the outcome of this application will escalate the case.

Declaring a vacancy in Ward 11, Oudtshoorn, is a result of yet another dirty political campaign by the Speaker and the ANC coalition in the Oudtshoorn municipality. On the 7th of August, the DA acquired majority representation on the Oudtshoorn Council by winning the by-election in Ward 13. Since then, however, the ANC has frustrated the DA's efforts to convene a Council meeting and even refused to consider motions of no confidence in the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Speaker, despite a court order compelling them to do so.

Councillor Wildschut's "letter of resignation" is another attempt by the ANC coalition to attain the majority on the Oudtshoorn council and to cling to power through dirty tricks even though the residents of Oudtshoorn voted them out.

On Monday I will lead a march in Oudtshoorn, calling on the ANC/Icosa/NPP coalition to respect and obey democratic outcomes in Oudtshoorn.
