Astonishing that Woolworths still has trade ties with Israel - YCL

League says it supports supports the intensification of the #BoycottWoolworths campaign

YCLSA supports the intensification of the #BoycottWoolworths campaign with the National Day of Action, Saturday 27th September 2014

The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) supports the intensification of the #BoycottWoolworths campaign with the National Day of Action tomorrow, Saturday 27th September.  More than 40 protests, flashmobs and stop shops have been planned countrywide as we step up our demands that Woolworths end trade relations with Apartheid Israel.

Woolworths is behaving recklessly and ignoring legitimate concerns by consumers, thus tarnishing the image of the company and endangering shareholders money.

Woolworths share price has dropped since the complete boycott of Woolworths was called.

The National Day of Action against Woolworths comes against the backdrop of the Russell Tribunal's emergency session in Brussels, Belgium this week. The jury found that Israel during its recent attacks on Gaza during Operation Protective Edge, committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of murder, extermination and persecution and also incitement to genocide.

It astonishing that Woolworths which claims to be an ethical and responsible retailer still has trade ties with Israel which has been found guilty of such heinous human rights abuses.

YCLSA members, branches and staff will be participating in the dozens of #BoycottWoolworths events taking place during the National Day of Action. We call on justice and peace loving people to join us.

Notes to the editor:

The Russell Tribunal was established by Lord Bertrand Russell in 1966 to investigate crimes committed in Vietnam and judge them according to international law. The Russell Tribunal on Palestine is an International People's Tribunal created by a large group of citizens involved in the promotion of peace and justice in the Middle East.
