Gengezi Mgidlana new Secretary of Parliament - Office of ANC Chief Whip

Former DDG in Office of the Presidency fills position left vacant by death of Michael Coetzee

APPOINTMENT OF NEW PARLIAMENTARY HEAD

21 November 2014

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip welcomes the appointment of the new Secretary to Parliament, Gengezi Mgidlana, by the sittings of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces respectively on Thursday.

Mr Mgidlana, whose five-year contract begins on 1 December, fills the position left vacant by the late Secretary to Parliament, Mr Michael Coetzee, who passed on earlier this year. His appointment was recommended by an interview panel, which included independent experts, to the two Houses of Parliament.

Secretary to Parliament serves as the chief administrator of Parliament, equivalent to a Chief Executive Officer, and is accountable to the presiding officers and Parliament.

Mr Mgidlana, whose academic qualifications include a law degree, has previously served as Secretary to the Gauteng Legislature, deputy director-general in the Office of the Presidency and also served for years on NEPAD. We are confident that the wealth of experience on governance, legislative and legal matters he brings to this position will enhance this institution's fulfilment of its constitutional functions.

We congratulate him on this deserved appointment and wish him well in his new responsibilities. We extend our appreciation to the deputy Secretary to Parliament, Ms Penelope Tyawa, for having held the fort in the last few months.
