Motlanthe's statement on Mandela's health

Deputy president says former president is under the best care

Motlanthe on the health status of former President Nelson Mandela

Yesterday, I received a full briefing on the health condition of the former President Nelson Mandela from the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, the Acting Chief of the SANDF, Lieutenants General Themba Matanzima and the Surgeon General (Dr) Vejay Ramlakan.

In the briefing they reassured me that Mr Mandela is receiving the best medical care from the military. I also had an opportunity this morning to visit Madiba in his ward and i was convinced that he was under the best care.

Madiba's health has varied over the years considering his age. His medical team had decided to step up his care. Every precaution is being taken to ensure that he is always in good health.

Madiba will receive regular check ups and closer monitoring from the military doctors and a team of experts.

Government will keep the country informed from time to time of his condition as information becomes available. We appreciate the concern; love and care of all South Africans and citizens of the world have for the former President.

We would like to appeal to all South Africans to remain calm and allow the medical team space to attend to the former President.

We also want to appeal to members of the media to allow the family and medical team to do their work without hindrance.
