Oudtshoorn speaker suffers apparent heart attack - Gordon April

Mayor says that as a result today's Special Council Meeting has had to be cancelled

Judgement in Stoffels v Van Wyk and others

In his judgement in Stoffels v Van Wyk and others, Mr Justice André le Grange on Tuesday, 10 September 2013 found that the meeting of the DA and Cope councillors, and five ANC councillors, that took place after I closed the Council Meeting on May 31, was convened unlawfully.

The judgement also states that all resolutions claimed to have taken at the illegal meeting are unlawful and of no force and effect; and that the Speaker, Executive Mayor and Executive Deputy Mayor are those persons who occupied these positions immediately prior to the illegal meeting.

Also, the 11 DA councillors and the Cope councillor who attended this illegal meeting, and the five councillors who abandoned the ANC at the meeting and joined the DA, and the DA itself, have to pay the costs of the matter jointly and severally.

Speaker of the Greater Oudtshoorn hospitalised

The Speaker of the Oudtshoorn Municipal Council, Alderman John Stoffels, was rushed to the Klein Karoo Medi-Clinic on Wednesday afternoon, 11 September 2013, after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Aldm. Stoffels had a comfortable night and his condition is satisfactory this morning as he is responding well to treatment.

Stoffels has a recent history of heart trouble since he was advised by medical support staff during the 2009 Two Oceans Marathon to abandon the race. He takes regular exercise under strict medical caution.

Stoffels's hospitalisation resulted in the cancellation of today's Special Council Meeting.

The office of the Speaker will determine the soonest Special Council Meeting in due course.
