PRESIDENT JACOB ZUMA'S APPOINTMENT OF ADVOCATE MENZI SIMELANE

Government welcomes the decision by the North Gauteng High Court earlier today dismissing an application by the Democratic Alliance to set aside President Jacob Zuma's appointment of Advocate Menzi Simelane as the National Director of Public Prosecutions.

The court judgement clears the way for the National Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Menzi Simelane to continue focusing on his duties which are crucial to the effective functioning of the criminal justice system.

"The National Director of Public Prosecutions plays an important role in our fight against crime and this judgement allows Adv Simelane to continue on the immediate task at hand of fighting corruption and crime," says Themba Maseko, Chief Executive Officer, Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS).

Today's judgement reaffirms President Jacob Zuma's appointment of Adv Menzi Simelane as the National Director of Public Prosecutions. The appointment of the National Director of Public Prosecution which was effective from 1 December 2009 brought stability to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)
