Ndebele should donate Merc to charity - YCL

Young Communists say exchange of such gifts sends the wrong signal

STATEMENT OF THE YOUNG COMMUNIST LEAGUE ON THE R1.1m CAR GIFT TO THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT

The Young Communist League [uFasimba] notes the gift given to the Minister of Transport, S'bu Ndebele, of a vehicle worth R1.1 million. The YCLSA accepts the explanation made by the Minister that there are no ulterior motives behind the giving and receiving of the gift. We also welcome the fact that Minister Ndebele has made the information public, and had not exercised the clandestine declaration of the gift in Parliament.

The YCLSA however advises the Minister of Transport to donate the car to charity so as to fend off any further negative publicity, and as a means not to damage his own reputation. We believe that there are a lot of Non-Governmental Organisation that can use the gift to better use.

We want also to send a word of caution to both companies and government officials from exchanging gifts as this sends a wrong signal to our communities and runs the risk of compromising governing ethics.

Statement issued by the YCLSA national office, May 19 2009
